30th ANNUAL REPORT

Chairpersons Message

We are very excited to note that MECA has not only survived but thrived and is still here after almost 30 years of operation. We are planning an event early in 2020 to celebrate this wonderful milestone so watch this space.

THE YEAR THAT WAS 2019

We have seen some changes and had a number of exciting opportunities come our way in the past 12 months. We flagged in our last annual report that we had just moved into our fabulous new premises, co-located with Mission Australia in the heart of Mt Druitt. What an amazing opportunity that has given us, with lots of new space and a great new garden area. We have worked in partnership with Food Faith to run gardening and food growing programs for the community which has been a great initiative and for which we were able to secure a $30,000 Community Inclusion grant. And we also thank Bunnings for their support with this initiative.

We worked closely with the NSW Settlement Partnership including Settlement Services International and SydWest MSI as the new funding was released and sadly all organisations including MECA saw a reduction in funding for Settlement Services which in turn has resulted in a reduction of staffing hours. However we did receive some additional funding for community capacity building which we were grateful to receive.

We have also strengthened our partnership with SydWest MSI with an agreement reached between the two organisations to develop a process and model to align our services, with an initial focus on the Youth and Community Development area of service to clients. This approach is quite innovative, harnessing the strengths of both organisations to ensure resources are used effectively for the benefit of our communities.

And we were so excited to be selected for a makeover by The Living Room on Channel 10 in the second half of 2019 which will give us even more opportunities for partnerships with our community – and a great space for events!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Amie, our amazing manager, who has taken maternity leave and had a beautiful baby girl in September 2019. And our thanks to Daniel who took on the role of Interim Coordinator and has done a great job. Our amazing staff also deserve recognition – thanks to Yousef, Raeanne, and Fadi who are all great assets to MECA. And to our new staff member Jes – welcome!

I would also like to acknowledge the commitment and passion of our Management Committee – Garry, Farabi, Abbas, Kooryn and Moisema. Thank you all for your continuing support of MECA and for giving of your time and your energy.

Finally, I would like to pay tribute to the wonderful Kathleen Buckwell who sadly passed away in late 2019. Kathleen was a longstanding volunteer at MECA and will be much missed. In recognition of her contribution, and with the agreement of her family, from this year onwards we will offer an award for volunteers in her name.

Lots of people contribute to MECA’s ongoing success and so I extend my thanks to all of you – clients, members of our community, partners, staff, volunteers, students, and management committee members. Without you I really believe MECA would not be where it is today.
